Himalayan Intercultural Spring Semester '09

Highlights of a January-May '09 Vermont Intercultural Semesters program in the Himalaya, beginning with a Delhi & Agra trip, travel to Uttarakhand, rafting in Rishikesh, then to beautiful Ladakh for months of classes and intercultural exchange with SECMOL school pas, trekking, and homestays.

Sham Valley

Trekking through the Sham Valley over 5 days, 12 VIS students, 3 SECMOLpas, begining in Likkir, 4 hrs hiking to Yangtang, 2 hr hike next day to Ulley, next day hike to Hemishupachen, next day hike to Ang, next day morning pickup from Ang, and a stop at Alchi on the way back to SECMOL. Days travelling over snowfields, evenings in homestays in warm kitchens making thukpa noodles.

SECMOL Campus

Nubra Trek

Travels & trekking from Pangong Lake on the Tibetan Border in Eastern Ladakh, over Chang-La pass, homestays in Chachuskool, and Relly, over Meg-Bon La pass, to the Nubra Valley Region in Northern Ladakh, near the Pakistani-Indian LOC. Horses, cars, camels, & our own two feet.

Mulbekh, Chiktan & Takmachik

Semester in the Himalayas trip through northern Ladakh, with stops in Kargil, Mulbekh, Chigtan, and Takmachik. In Mulbekh we spent the night at a Buddhist nunnery, in Chigtan we stayed at our guide Tashi's home in a primarily Muslim village and visited the schools there, and in Takmachik we spent a week helping out with the fall harvest and living in the homes of families there.
