Manmodi Group : Junnar

Manmodi group of caves located on the Manmodi hill near Junnar - dist pune (90 km) situated to the south-southwest of the town. The monastic complex was known as Gidha-vihara (Gridhra-vihara) and the hill as Manamukuda in ancient inscriptions. The cave group consists of nearly 40 individual excavations excluding the cisterns. They are located in three distinct groups known as: (i) Bhimasankar group, southeast of Manmodi hill, in which one cave has the donor inscription of Ayama, the minister of King Nahapana dated in the year 46 (A.D. 124). (ii) Amba-Ambika group, to the north of Bhimasankar, known such due to the carving of figures of Tirthankaras and Ambika, the latter Sasanadevi of 23rd Jaina Tirthankara, Neminatha. (iii) Bhutalinga group, nearly 200 m west of the Amba-Ambalika group.

Narayangad

There is a hill fort called Narayangad near Narayangoan. This fort is around 10 km from Narayangaon. The fort is easy to climb. From Narayangaon catch a State Transport bus to Khodadgaon(Khodad). Get down at Malyacha Mala about 8 km from Narayangaon. Start walking towards Gadachiwadi. The fort has temple and some water tanks such as Narayan Taka, Chambhar Taka & Saat Taka. Narayangaon is a town in the Pune district of Maharashtra state, India. The Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope site lies 10 kilometres to the west. The area around the town is rapidly gaining reputation as one of the leading wine-producing areas in India.

Vichitra Gad Aka Rudreshwar

Vichitra Gad Aka Rudreshwar Aka Binni Cha Killa is situated at 65 Kilometers from Pune and is suitable for a one day trek. It is located near Bhor village and is 3661 feet above sea level. The climb is not difficult and can be done in half an hour. The top presents a scenic view of the huge Bhatghar lake. There is a goddess temple at the top but is not suitable for accomodation. No place is available at the top for accomodation. The construction is great and is still in place. This fort lacks forests and you may face scree portions on your route back to the village. The base village is named Khanapur. Food can be arranged from the villagers. Potable water is available at the top near the second door of the fort. Although there are other tanks atop the fort but the water in this tanks is not potable. There are Five Bhuruj at the top. The top of fort is hexagonal that’s why it’s popularly known as Vichitragad.

Rajgad

'Rajgad' - the name describes the place itself. The king of all the forts. The fort of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. He spent almost 25/30 yrs here. The place of historical importance, very near from Pune. Rajgad is south-west 40 Kms from Pune. Rajgad is famous for its construction. Fort is of 1350 Mtrs. high, Rajgad is famous for its Padmavati Machi, Sanjivani Machi ,Suvela Machi and 'Bale killa' - the pride of Maharashtra. It is almost 500 feet high and really difficult to climb. 'Bale killa' is one of the best fort in Maharashtra. It is very difficult to climb. One can see various places and forts especially from Rajgadh. It includes Torana, Raireshwar, Mahabaleshwar, Pratapgad, Raigad, Lingana, Bhatghar, Tung, Visapur and Sinhagad etc. Rajgad is truly a place to visit and remember the greatest Maratha King. One must visit the fort and enjoy the nature and the beauty of the great fort.

Tunga

Tunga - Utunga On the back waters of Pavana Dan is a small fort that rises high above the skyline. Its trinagular pinnacle kisses the clouds in monsoon to give it a smoky appearance. A rock piercing the horizon can be seen to the south of Lohagad, this is Tunga Fort. Pavana Dam surrounds it. This fort can be approach by the motorboat for Pavana Dam. It is a stiff fort to climb. It is a narrow fort with slippery roads for climbing. There is a temple of Mahadeo on the fort. During Shivaji's period, this fort was use for keeping a watch on the other forts. There is nothing much to see on the top of the fort but the green view is amazing. There is a small temple (all broken down) above its called as Tungai Devi mandir. One can sit on the top and see many forts in the vicinity mainly Lohgad,Visapur,Tikona,Korigad.

Kaas / Kas Plateau

Kaas/Kas is a volcanic plateau that becomes home to millions of tiny flowers in late monsoons. The whole spectacle is beyond words. There is a little lake thats formed by the catchment of rainwater. The road continues to Bamanoli towards Koyana backwaters from here. Thoseghar coupled with Kas is a much much recommended for anyone looking for a nice stress free drive, some good pictures and anyone looking to catch few leeches.

Sajjangad

Sajjangad is Located at a distance of 9 kms from Satara, Sajjangad Fort was the spiritual capital of Shivshahi during the reign of Chhatrapati Shivaji. It is the place where Samarth Ramdas had his Samadhi. 750 steps leads to the entrance of the fort located 3000 feet above sea level. There are two reservoirs inside the fort. On Das Navami day, marking the birth of the Guru, people from all over gather at the fort to celebrate the festival.

Vajragad Aka Rudramal

"Vajra" means rock. There are big, solid rocks on this fort. Also there is a temple of lord "Vajra hanuman". So this fort is named as "Vajragad". the Rudreshwar temple of lord shiva beside the hunumana temple. Vajragad also known as Rudramal. On the east of purandar fort one route is headed towards the Vajragad. Few destroyed military barracks add spice and curiosity for new visitors, this destroyed structures of barracks merge with the beauty of nature in such a way that one can fall in love with the surrounding. The path towards Vajra is very narrow and hidden by jungle weeds, there is very few ppl know abt the fort and due to miltary vigiliance no one try to visit Vajra. The entrance of the fort, which is in very good condition. On the fort you can see the temple of Vajra Hanuman and Rudra mahadev surrounded by six small tanks, the water is not potable. Towards the east you can found few more broken buruj, which guarded fort from the decades.

Vadu, TulaPur, Ramdara,

Vadu and Tulapur:are the places related with Sambhaji - the son of Shivaji Maharaj. Sambhaji was killed in Tulapur and his samadhi was built in Vadu. Thus, both these places are historically very important.Tulapur is situated on the banks of 3 rivers- Bhima, Bhama and Indrayani. It is famous for the temple of Lord Shiva. In this temple - known as Sangameshwar, Sambhaji was arrested by Aurangzeb and was later killed. Tulapur was originally known as ' Nagargaon'. A small temple here is very beautiful and must see. And next to the temple, the samadhi of Sambhaji Maharaj is built. Ramdara: Near Loni Kalbor on Solapur highway 30 Km From Pune station. Beautiful temple (SHIVALAYA)surrounded by a lake. All 12 Jyotirlinga's little little speciality is made in the Shivlinga of this Shivalaya.Thie temple is very ancient and was established by Late Shree 1008 Devipuri Maharaj (Dhundi Baba)

'Mangalgadh' Aka 'Bhuleshwar'

Just about 50 Kms. from Pune. Bhuleshwar is a nice and cool place to visit. Bhuleshwar is famous for the temple of Lord Shiva. The temple situated on a hill, was built during the era of Pandavas. Originally , it was a fort called as 'Mangalgadh'. The temple was built in 13th century. Here beautiful carvings dominate the walls from the beginning enhancing it's stone structure. Bhuleshwar has historical significance as it is the place where Devi Parvati danced for Lord Shiva and after they went to Kailas and get married. Thus this place is very important both historically and mythologically. Though this is place is having such importance, Bhuleshwar is one of the ignored places in Pune region. This is place is crowded in Shrawan and Mahashivratri only. You can see Jejuri on south and Purandar on south-west and Dhavaleshwar on West. Truly Bhuleshwar is a place worth to visit and spend a day.

Chavand & Kukdeshwar: 12 May 2008

Chavand:This is one of the 4 forts which guards Naneghat. The whole range that has been guarding the ancient commercial route of Naneghat for thousands of years includes the forts of Jeevdhan, Hadsar, and Mahishgad & Chavand. These belong to the Satvaahan era. And Chavand being one of them is a very significant one. Situated at a height of 3000ft from sea level, the fort houses many a remnant of constructions that take us about 800 years back into the time. The fort is in Pune district, at a distance of 20 km from the city of Junnar. The region at the foothills of the fort contains exotic flora & fauna. It was here that we could spot at least 12 varieties of birds. Village of Chavandwadi lies at the base of the fort. Kukdeshwar:Kukdeshwar Temple is located in Pune District of Maharashtra, India. Shivneri Fort a historic military fortification located near Junnar which is around 105 km from Pune, a city in the Indian state of Maharashtra. It is known as the birthplace of Shivaji, who would go on not only to rule Maharashtra but to found the Maratha Empire. The fort is huge one and with good height. Because of it's uniqueness and difficult to reach , Shahaji - father of Shivaji - kept his wife - Jijabai during her pregnancy. The fort is tough to climb from the hills. But the normal road is comparatively simple through a bit time consuming. This road has 7 doors till one reaches the actual fort. The temple of 'Devi Shivai' is in between and which is very old. After the name of this goddess , Shivaji was named. The temple is very beautiful.

Mulshi Dam, Tamhini Ghaat

The beauty of Mulshi lake can be observed from 'Valanewadi' - 6 Kms. from Mulshi. Sahyadri is famous for its deadly hills and its beauty. Both the things can be observed here. The hills of Ratnagiri and hill ranges of 'Hattihant' and 'Pagota' are huge ones and terrific. Some of these hills are almost 4000 feet high. There is one platue here popularly known as 'Lavmal'. Mulshi is very near to Pune and a short trip here can be arranged. One must enjoy the marvelous lake, the dam, forest and hilly region of Mulshi. If you are lucky then you can enjoy boating here as well. Thus, it is a newly developing picnic spot near Pune. Tahamhini Gaat... is covered with dense forest.

Bhimashankar to Khandus : via Shidi Ghat 4/5 April 2008

Bhimashankar is at a height of 3250 feet. Karjat is the nearest station from which bus for Khandas can be caught (1st bus is at 10:00 a.m.). The 11/2 hour journey (approximately 40 Km.) will take you to Khandas. The summit could be embraced either by Ganesh Ghat or Shidi Ghat which is a bit tough, but very much enjoyable. Going through to the dense forest will take you to the top in around 4 hrs.

Kille Purandar

Purandhar fort stands 4,472 ft. above the sea (1,387 m) in the Western Ghats, 20 miles southeast of Pune. It figures repeatedly in the rising of Shivaji against the Bijapur kingdom and the Mughals and was one of the favourite forts of Shivaji. It gave its name to a treaty with the Marathas, signed in 1665. Sambhaji, Shivaji's elder son was born at Purandar.The fort was a favourite stronghold of the Peshwas whenever the unwalled city of Poona was threatened. Later it was utilized as a sanatorium for British soldiers. Purandhar fort has a National Cadet Corps Academy. It is a favorite destination for paragliders and trekkers. There are many temples like Purandeshwar mandir, Kedareshwar mandir, Sawai Madhavrao Peshwa mandir etc. The fort has a statue of Murarbaji Deshpande, the fort-keeper (killedar) who was killed while protecting the fort from Mughals. A temple to Shiva is located at the heart of the fort.

Summer Foilage

Malshej Ghat is a tourist spot near the city of Mumbai in the state of Maharashtra, India. The site is nestled in the lofty rugged hills of the Western Ghats. The best time to visit is between August and September. At this time of the year, the hills are clothed in a soothing shade of mint green and the weather is cool due to the monsoons. Known for its misty tops and ice cold cascades at this time of the year, the site is a very popular weekend getaway for most of the city's residents at that time of the year. The site is home to hundreds of different kinds of flora and fauna especially the avian population such as quails, rails, crakes, flamingos and cuckoos.

Lohgad

Lohagad fort is 7kms south of Malavali station on the Pune-Mumbai railway line. Situated on a side range of Sahyadri mountains, if divides the basins of Indrayani and Pavana rivers. Close to Lohagad, on its eastern side, there is another fort, called Visapur. The approach to Lohagad is from the village Lohadwadi, situated in the depression between Lohagad and Visapur. Visapur Fort is larger and also higher than Lohgad fort. Climbing from the north towards the village, one can see on the left side the famous Buddhist caves of Bhaja. The four large gats of Lohagad are very intricately arranged and are still intact. In the later Peshwa period, Nana Fadanis (1742-1800 AD) built several structures in the fort including a big tank and a step-well (bawali). There is also a small temple and grave of a muslim pir. On the west side of the fort there is a long and narrow wall like fortified spur called Vinchukata in Marathi (scorpion sting) because of its natural shape.

Jejuri & Saswad

Jejuri is one of the famous temples in Maharashtra. Popularly known as ' Khandobachi Jejuri ' - it is one of the major Gods in Maharashtra. The God of Jejuri - Mhalsakant or Malhari Martand - is popular amongst the Dhangars. Dhangar is one of the oldest tribes in Maharashtra. Khandoba is known to be their god. Jejuri is to the South - East of Pune towards Phaltan. But the temples of Khandoba is situated on a small hill , so can be seen from the approaching road. Saswad: Saswad is a land of famous saints, historic people and author. You can see the monuments of Sant Sopandev - brother of Sant Dnyaneshwar, Shrimant Balaji Vishwnath Peshwe - founder of Peshwas, Baji Pasalkar - famous Maratha Sardar and Acharya P.K. Atre - famous Marathi Writer.

Teekona

From the village of Tikona Peth : The main route to the fort is from the village of Tikona Peth. To reach this village, alight at Kamshet, which is two stops ahead of Lonavala on the Mumbai- Pune rail route. From Kamshet railway station, take a bus / shared private vehicle (jeep) to Kale colony. One can also get a vehicle to reach Tikona Peth from Kale colony.

Adalaj Wav Step Well (1499)

The Adalaj Wav Step Well is located 18 kilometers north of Ahmedabad in the Gandhinagar district. It was built during the reign of Queen Rudabai, a muslim ruler. Though now dry, the well once provided water to weary travellers and pilgrims along the roads outside of Ahmedabad. The four-level well is dug directly into the water table, exposing fresh water that rose and fell according the seasons and the amount of rainfall. Its deep interior provided cool relief from the harsh Indian sun.
